Anthem (The Original Mix)

Posted April 22, 2012

Track: Anthem (The Original Mix)

Artist: N-Joi

Year: 1991

Label: Deconstruction

In 1983, Larry Levan served up a special bass-heavy and funk-filled mix of Gwen Guthrie's Peanut Butter.  Listen at the 30 second mark for the sampled vocals, but keep listening around 1:15-1:45 for the sickest bassline you'll hear all day.

Years later, UK outfit N-Joi would use future Republica frontwoman Saffron to belt out Guthrie's sultry vocals over a piano-driven floor-filler, creating one of the biggest crossover hits of the era.

Beginning Of Life

Posted February 20, 2012

Track: Beginning Of Life

Artist: Mike Perras

Year: 1991

Label: Bassic Records

I said I'd get around to the "B" side after profiling Keep Movin' in 2010.  From start to finish, Beginning Of Life delivers an ambient tour de force.  With a hypnotic melody, bassy underscore, and brilliant incorporation of hand drums, Mike Perras brought the goods on this ageless classic.

Turn Up The Music (Pumpin' Stockin' Mix)

Posted June 22, 2011

Track: Turn Up The Music (Pumpin' Stockin' Mix)

Artist: Dr. Baker

Year: 1991

Label: Coma Records

Assisted by sisters Charlotte and Camilla Wisøfeldt, Denmark producer/DJ Kenneth Bager created the Dr. Baker alias in the late 80s.  Known for establishing the house scene in Denmark and his legendary parties, Bager remains an active participant in the industry.  Fellow Dane and eventual international super-producer Joe Belmaati dropped a handful of mixes, including the Pumpin' Stockin' Mix which was released as a white label promo.  While this version was never widely distributed or played, I love how the intro draws out the beautiful organ groove.

By the way, here's the radio version in music video form.  Regrettably, the rap parts are pure cheese; lots to like about Eurodance, but the rap verses just never aged well.

No One Knows (Eddie's Hot Dub)

Posted June 19, 2011

Track: No One Knows (Eddie's Hot Dub)

Artist: Annette Taylor

Year: 1991

Label: Active Records

Neither garage house vocalist Annette Taylor or DJ Eddie Arroyo (both hail from the NY area) are especially wide known, but a young Eddie Arroyo laid down some nice mixes of Taylor's No One Knows in '91.  Taylor's got an amazing set of pipes and Eddie constructed a bass heavy track with some industrial overtones to give it a dark after-hours vibe.

Eddie's Hot Vocal Mix features a more upbeat piano groove:

Burning (Vibe Mix)

Posted May 30, 2011

Track: Burning (Vibe Mix)

Artist: M.K. (ft. Alana)

Year: 1991

Label: Area 10

My sincere apologies for the lack of updates - I've been busy with work the last 1.5 months, but am expecting to get back to more regular postings shortly.  Without further ado, Burning was MK's breakthrough track, the song that put him on the map (his later Nightcrawlers work just took him to the next level).  Musically, Burning contains an unforgettable "off-key" bell patch which shapes a hypnotizing melody and provides the framework for Alana's haunting vocals.  The track's impeccably timed bass bottoms underscore the excellent production and enhance the timeless essence of the tune.  Always a floor-filler and frequently a favorite of big MK fans.

Don't Wanna Go (Mike Dunn's Vocal Mix)

Track: Don't Wanna Go (Mike Dunn's Vocal Mix)

Artist: Sterling Void

Year: 1991

Label: D.J. International Records

Chicago native Sterling Void is best known for his 1986 classic, It's Alright, but I've always thought the piano driven Don't Wanna Go is just as good, if not better.  The oft-sampled piano chords lay a solid foundation for Paris Brightledge's effervescent vocals.  After Trax Records, D.J International was arguably the most important of the Chicago house labels, specializing in soulful vocal and hip-house tracks.

Gettin' Out (Justin Robertson's Most Excellent Mix)

Track: Gettin' Out (Justin Robertson's Most Excellent Mix)

Artist: S.L.D.

Year: 1991

Label: Creed Records

British DJ Justin Robertson masterfully remixed this piano-driven anthem from Italian Luigi Stanga.  The vocals are lifted from Gwen Guthrie's 1982 song, Getting Hot.  Solid track.  Hat tip to Twitter user neone4jon for the reco.

Deep In My Heart (Red Zone)

Posted February 20, 2011

Track: Deep In My Heart (Red Zone)

Artist: Clubhouse

Year: 1991

Label: ZYX Records / Atlantic Records

Clubhouse was a well known Italian dance music outfit that produced several charting hits in the 80s and 90s.  One such hit was 1991's Deep In My Heart which reached #1 on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart.  Of the many remixes, David Morales' Red Zone mix stands above the crowd with its catchy deep house groove and Lady Miss Kier (of Deee-Lite fame) vocal sample.  The "Red Zone" alias dates to Morales' early residency at a NYC club named Red Zone where Morales' underground legend took hold.

Deeper (Deeper Than Deep Mix)

Posted February 20, 2011

Track: Deeper (Deeper Than Deep Mix)

Artist: Susan Clark (ft. Stimulation)

Year: 1991

Label: FFRR

Give James Bratton credit for the original production, but the best mix of Deeper was an unreleased version from a Benji Candelario and Wayne Rollins promo.  The Deeper Than Deep Mix is a hard hitting number with strong synth stabs and a rolling bassline reminiscent of Straight Up House (Rave Mix).  Clark's soulful vocals are stripped down and heavily filtered, creating a haunting effect that underscores this track's dark and dirty ambiance.

Another excellent mix is the 111 East House Mix, courtesy of legendary deep house producer Kerri Chandler:

Say It Loud

Posted February 13, 2011

Track: Say It Loud

Artist: The R.A.S.E. (Ron Allen Sound Experience)

Year: 1991

Label: Strobe Records

Say It Loud won't be the only infectious classic house track I profile from Ron Allen's 1991 E.P, but it's the first and probably my favorite of the two (the other is Get On Up).  This crowd pleasure features a superb piano groove, a touch of vox, plenty of breakbeats, and a constant tribal chant to keep things interesting.  The slowly soaring synths really seal it for me and give the track added emotion.  It's a shame this was so slept on as it was worthy of much more.

Shock The Beat (Piano Mix)

Posted February 5, 2011

Track: Shock The Beat (Piano Mix)

Artist: Electric Choc

Year: 1991

Label: Hi Tech Music

Produced by Italian DJ Eddy Milani under the Electric Choc alias, Shock The Beat remains one of the greatest piano-driven anthems in house music history.  The track starts with an acid buildup before a signature piano breakdown drops, setting the tone for the remainder of the song.  With the exception of a few soulful vocal teases, this is just a feel-good instrumental that still sounds fresh 20 years on.

I Am Free (Soma Mix)

Posted January 29, 2011

Track: I Am Free (Soma Mix)

Artist: Morgan King

Year: 1993 (orig. 1991)

Label: OM Records

I Am Free is a gorgeous piece of ambient music from Morgan King, a long accomplished UK musician/producer/DJ.  Patience is rewarded with this track as the beat doesn't actually drop until 4+ minutes.  I'm not a skilled enough wordsmith to describe this track well, so you'll have to just listen for yourself.  If you want a mix that's equally beautiful, but more palatable for a club crowd, go with the Soma Mix.

What U Want (Another One)

Track: What U Want (Another One)

Artist: Chocolate Fudge

Year: 1991

Label: Azuli Records

Since we're on our way to 1,000 classic house tracks, there's plenty of room for more obscure titles that have largely been forgotten as time moves on.  One such track is What U Want, from the UK duo of Sean Casey and Miles Morgan.  It's not going to get people out of their seats, but it has a killer bassline and some ambient jungle sounds to keep things interesting.

Last Rhythm (Vocal Extended)

Posted January 16, 2011

Track: Last Rhythm (Vocal Extended)

Artist: Last Rhythm (ft. Silvie Carter)

Year: 1991

Label: American Records

Last Rhythm was an Italian collective headed by DJ Giulio Benedetti.  His debut self-titled track was a blissful instrumental with strong ambient qualities and a memorable synth breakdown at the midpoint.  The song was especially popular in the UK and a favorite of Sasha and Asterix & Space's pirate radio show.  Here's the original:

Remixes were issued the following year featuring the vocals of Silvie Carter.  The Vocal Extended mix is the best of the bunch.  Aside from the rich vocals, this track has a more uptempo vibe than the original and includes some nice piano licks.  Old school purists may have a preference, but in my book you can't go wrong with either version.  Here's the Vocal Extended mix:

Got A Love For You (Hurley's House Mix)

Posted January 9, 2011

Track: Got A Love For You (Hurley's House Mix)

Artist: Jomanda

Year: 1991

Label: Big Beat

One of Steve Hurley's legendary remixes is his house treatment of Got A Love For You from Jomanda, arguably the best R&B crossover group from the late 80s/early 90s era.  From the three-note piano riff to the chopped vocal patterns to the fake-but-irresistible horns to the bongo drums to the rich vocals of Joanna Yavahan Thomas, Hurley perfected all musical elements and created an immortal club classic in the process.  The sound of the drum build-up dropping out and the horns dropping in never gets old.

What Would We Do (Eight Minutes Of Madness Mix)

Posted December 30, 2010

Track: What Would We Do (Eight Minutes Of Madness Mix)

Artist: DSK

Year: 1992

Label: Boy's Own Recordings

Terry Farley and Pete Heller's remix of DSK's east-coast garage hit What Would We Do is a certified house classic.  While the song spawned dozens of mixes (including an excellent Steve Hurley cut on the original release), Heller & Farley's version stands out for it's heavy dubbing and hypnotic horns.  This track was a favorite of Junior Vasquez at the original Sound Factory in NYC.

I Got It (Groove Mix)

Posted December 26, 2010

Track: I Got It (Groove Mix)

Artist: YO! BOTS

Year: 1991

Label: RCA

I Got It is a forgotten track by the one and done collective known as YO! BOTS.  It starts with a catchy organ groove before a rolling bassline + piano kicks in.  No crazy effects, just a wind-down track that still sounds fresh nearly two decades on.

Take It! (Mighty Version)

Track: Take It! (Mighty Version)

Artist: Alex Lee

Year: 1992

Label: React

Take It! is a slick production from Alessandro Neri, recording as Alex Lee.  The track was first released in 1991 with remixes issued on the React label a year later.  Take It! features a rolling breakbeat, jazzy overtones, and piano licks that result in an enjoyable house classic.

I'm Doing Fine Now (Silky Soul Mix)

Posted November 24, 2010

Track: I'm Doing Fine Now (Silky Soul Mix)

Artist: The Pasadenas

Year: 1991

Label: Columbia

The Pasadenas were an R&B group from the UK, peaking in popularity in the late 80s/early 90s.  Steve "Silk" Hurley put his signature stamp on their hit song I'm Doing Fine Now with this gem of a remix.  It's definitely got a downtempo vibe, but deserves to be showcased here since it's been so underappreciated.  For my money, no producer/remixer had a higher batting average than Steve Hurley, almost anything with his name on it (and that's a lot of music!) is solid.  The guy just had an incredible Midas touch and I'll be spotlighting many more of his mixes here in the months ahead.

Keep Movin'

Posted November 20, 2010

Track: Keep Movin'

Artist: Mike Perras

Year: 1991

Label: Bassic Records

Keep Movin' was a huge track from Canadian Mike Perras that a lot of old school house heads will remember.  The combination of the string intro, uplifting melody and crashing drums makes for a beautiful song.  More than deserving of its inclusion on my list of classic house tracks.  And yes, I'll get to what was on the B-side in a later post!

ABOUT

This site profiles my favorite classic house tracks. Most selections are from the 80s and 90s with a strong - but not exclusive - deep house, progressive and old school Chicago influence. I could never fully warm up to acid house, overly ambient tracks, or anything that bumps >135bpm. Since many have asked, there's no single definition of classic house music, but Ishkur has an excellent guide to electronica music that can serve as a primer for anyone interested.  I know some of the videos get pulled due to copyright issues - just search on YouTube since most stuff gets re-upped anyway.
