Money's Too Tight (Fire Island Dub)

Posted October 31, 2010

Track: Money's Too Tight (Fire Island Dub)

Artist: Simply Red

Year: 1997

Label: EastWest

A smooth deep house groove can carry a track a long way.  Let's explore the evolution of this soulful song.

1982:  First recorded by The Valentine Brothers of Columbus Ohio:

1985:  Covered by the popular British group Simply Red, the track becomes a top 30 hit in the US.  It's hard to imagine a song that mentions Reaganomics not sucking, but hey, it was pretty solid!

1997:  Heller & Farley (Fire Island) do their thing; the dub mix is a classic:

2009:  Alex Gaudino keeps things fresh with a pretty decent remix.  Maybe the recession inspired the latest wave of remixes?

Deep Inside (Masters At Work Mix)

Posted October 31, 2010

Track: Deep Inside (Masters At Work Mix)

Artist: Hardrive

Year: 1995 (original release was 1993)

Label: Sound of Ministry

This is one of those stop-drop-and listen tracks that freezes conversations in mid-sentence and bring the focus back to the music when it you hear it in a club.  It should come with a label - WARNINGMay cause hands in the air and involuntary head bobbing.  Barbara Tucker has an amazing set of pipes and she's not afraid to use them against the backdrop of this garage house MAW masterpiece.  Play loud to fully appreciate!

The Haunted House of Rock

Track: The Haunted House of Rock

Artist: Whodini

Year: 1983

Label: Jive

My favorite Halloween track isn't house music - it's this old school rap joint from Brooklyn's own Whodini.

My favorite part was when the song is winding down and Jalil and Ecstasy discuss their plot to break out from The Haunted House of Rock

Ecstasy: Jalil, where you goin'?

Jalil: Be quiet man! Can't you see I'm tryin' to sneak out of here!

Ecstasy: Word man, let's break out, this place is crazy!

Jalil: Go have to see which way you gonna run man, this way or that way

Ecstasy: Yo man let's just get outta here, don't make no difference which way we run!

Jalil: Yes it do!

Ecstasy: Why?

Jalil: Because I don't wanna run over you!

If you want to see a couple minutes of the original music video, here ya go.  And a video review of the record!

BONUS:  Jive Electro released a New School vs. Old School album in 1999 featuring remixes of classic Jive artists songs.  It's not on YouTube, but I uploaded Westbam's mix of The Haunted House of Rock for your listening pleasure.

I'll Be Your Friend (Original Def Mix)

Posted October 30, 2010

Track: I'll Be Your Friend (Original Def Mix)

Artist: Robert Owens

Year: 1991

Label: RCA

This is just a sick track from start to finish.  A wicked bassline, Robert Owens vocals, and master production by a young David Morales make this one a gem.

You Can't Hide From Your Bud

Posted October 30, 2010

Track: You Can't Hide From Your Bud

Artist: DJ Sneak

Year: 1997

Label: Classic Music Company

You Can't Hide From Your Bud is my favorite cut from legendary sampler, DJ Sneak.  If there was an award for "Most Trusted Producer to Bring Respect to a Classic Record" DJ Sneak would win (take notes Mr. Combs).  A lot of people that don't get house music will find this track repetitive to the point of insanity, but there is genius in the Sneak style -  There's enough filtering, modulation, and Teddy Pendergrass "wells" to keep things interesting, even if the track seems like it's looping for 9 minutes.

First, here's the original Teddy Pendergrass song, You Can't Hide From Yourself, from 1977, epic in its own right:

Kites (Fantasy Flite Part One)

Posted October 30, 2010

Track: Kites (Fantasy Flite Part One)

Artist: Ultraviolet

Year: 1990

Label: Big Life

Kites is a unique track, but I think it's especially worthy of praise because it perfectly illustrates the timelessness of emotive lyrics and the ability for technology and creativity to give new life to much older songs.  The uplifting and beatiful vocals by Maria Nayler are lifted from Simon Dupree's 1967 song of the same name.  The Fantasy Flite Part One remix is the best out there.  Great vocals + dope beat = classic.

FYI: Pete Gooding did the best job with Kites when new remixes were dropped in 2009:

Closer (Club Mix)

Track: Closer (Club Mix)

Artist: Mr. Fingers

Year: 1992

Label: MCA

With an infectious sax riff, smooth female vocals (Sade?), and Larry Heard production, Closer is a undoubtedly a classic and quintessentially house.  There's a bunch of mixes, but the plain ol' club version gets the nod from me.

If you're a fan of the sax riff, check out Kerry 'Kaoz" Chandler's remix of Basil's City Streets, around the 3:15 mark:

Funkatarium

Posted October 23, 2010

Track: Funkatarium

Artist: Jump

Year: 1992

Label: Dark Records

Funkatarium is truly a special track.  Ingredients include an instantly recognizable intro, the coolest cow bell break you'll ever hear and tons of funk and energy to the very end.  I don't know the history of this track, but it wasn't discovered until 3-4 years after its original release from UK's Dark Records label.  Discogs.com tells us (and ears confirm) this track incorporates the rhythm guitar riff from the intro of Spandau Ballet's Chant No. 1 (I Don't Need This Pressure On).  There's a handful of remixes out there, but if you're digging the bells check out the cut by DJ Waxy Fresh.

Dream Drums (Junior Vasquez's All Over The Sound Factory Mix)

Track: Dream Drums (Junior Vasquez's All Over The Sound Factory Mix)

Artist: Lectroluv

Year: 1999

Label: Eightball Records

Fred Jorio (aka Lectroluv) is a NY-based producer who helped define tribal house in the early 90s.  Junior Vasquez constructed an epic remix to Dream Drums, instantly creating a club classic that popularized the tribal genre.

I Am The Music, Hear Me! (Fire Island Dub)

Posted October 17, 2010

Track: I Am The Music, Hear Me! (Fire Island Dub)

Artist: Millionaire Hippies

Year: 1993

Label: Deconstruction

Start this sucker at 0:00 and turn up the bass to hear an enthralling deep house groove sure to move the crowd.  True to it's repeating vocal, "Let it take control", this track is in charge.  With production by Danny Rampling and a Heller & Farley remix, it's no wonder this track is a monster.

Hold On (Tighter To Love) (Hurley's House Mix)

Posted October 16, 2010

Track: Hold On (Tighter To Love) (Hurley's House Mix)

Artist: Clubland

Year: 1991

Label: Pulse-8 Records

Steve "Silk" Hurley had the best remix of this gem.  The slower BPM, horns and Zemya Hamilton vocals give this track mainstream appeal, you can call it dance music with a jazzy house twist.  This is just a beautiful song with perfect production.  E-Smoove's Late Night Mix is also a winner.

Discogs: http://www.discogs.com/Clubland-Hold-On-Tighter-To-Love/release/83602

Although I'll give the nod to the Hurley mix, the Late Night Mix is an absolute must-have as well.  With a bumpin' silky smooth bassline, it's deep house at it's best.

Bells Of N.Y. (Xen Mantra's Beefy Bell's Mix)

Posted October 16, 2010

Track: Bells Of N.Y. (Xen Mantra's Beefy Bell's Mix)

Artist: Slo Moshun

Year: 1994

Label: 6 x 6 Records

The dopest remix to an already dope track.   Hailing from the UK, Slo Moshun created this devastating roller-coaster of a track that slows down to a hip hop break before coming back to life.   Enjoy!

Thank Ya

Posted October 16, 2010

Track: Thank Ya

Artist: Sweet D

Year: 1986

Label: Trax Records

Thank Ya is an underappreciated, keyboard-driven classic from 1986.  Sampling Cheryl Lynn's You Saved My Day (1978), Thank Ya was produced by Danny "Sweet D" Wilson and the legendary Chip E.   Naturally there was no music video, but some kind soul uploaded it to YouTube with a sexy animated dancer as a visual:)

Why I Like It:  I've chosen this track as my inaugural post because this song has a timeless energy to it with uplifting keyboard riffs and subtle haunting vocals.  The stripped down sound is unmistakably 80s, but this track never gets old to me.

ABOUT

This site profiles my favorite classic house tracks. Most selections are from the 80s and 90s with a strong - but not exclusive - deep house, progressive and old school Chicago influence. I could never fully warm up to acid house, overly ambient tracks, or anything that bumps >135bpm. Since many have asked, there's no single definition of classic house music, but Ishkur has an excellent guide to electronica music that can serve as a primer for anyone interested.  I know some of the videos get pulled due to copyright issues - just search on YouTube since most stuff gets re-upped anyway.
